Building codes are designed to ensure safe building techniques.  These important standards help protect your family from safety risks like structure failure, fire hazards caused by electrical and heating systems, and electrical shock.  They also help to eliminate costly repairs for shoddy work and save money in the long run.  Permits are critical to both new construction and the home improvement process, helping to protect what are many families' biggest investments.  Permits and accompanying inspections by building experts provide protection by ensuring safe workmanship, eliminating costly construction missteps before they happen. and avoiding potential deadly mistakes.
  • A building permit is required for all projects to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure.
  • Permits are also required for the construction, installation, enlargement, alteration, repair, removal, or replacement of any electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system regulated by technical codes.
  • Exceptions to permitted work include cosmetic work, such as carpeting, wood flooring, tile, cabinet replacement, and residential painting.
  • Required inspections are listed on all permits issued.

  • All inspections scheduled after 8:00 a.m. may be performed the following business day.
  • If you need to cancel an inspection after 8:00 a.m. on the day of the scheduled inspection, then please call 386 517 2000 ext 232 or use the Online Inspection Portal.
  • The Chief Building Official is available in the office from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. each business day.
